The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and warn! 2 And your Lord (Allah) magnify! 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 it will be a hard day 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 it scorches the skin; 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
