And verily We sent Moses with Our revelations unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds. 46 But when he came to them with Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) behold! They laughed at them. 47 We showed them Sign after Sign, each greater than its fellow, and We seized them with Punishment, in order that they might turn (to Us). 48 They said, "Sorcerer, call on your Lord for us, by virtue of His pledge to you: we shall certainly accept guidance," 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 And the Pharaoh said to his people: "O people, is not mine the kingdom of Egypt and these rivers that flow at my feet? Can you still not comprehend? 51 Am I better or this contemptible man who is scarcely able to express himself? 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 But when they continued to challenge Us, We inflicted Our retribution on them, and drowned them all: 55 We made them become of the people of the past and an example for the coming generations. 56
