a large group of the earlier people 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 But those of the left hand -- how those of the left hand -- 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
