The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
