The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
