Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the luminious Book. 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 therein every wise bidding 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 Covering the people; this is a painful torment. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
