He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 And what should teach thee? Perchance he would cleanse him, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 you attended to him, 6 Though it is not your concern if he should not grow (in fulness). 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 And is also fearful (of God), 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 Exalted, pure. 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what thing did He create him? 18 Of a drop of seed. He created him and formed him according to a measure. 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And grapes and green fodder 28 and olives, and palms, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 and fruits and fodder 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 and his mother and his father; 35 wife and sons, 36 On that day, each one has just one issue, which is enough for him. 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 with darkness overspread: 41 Such will be the Kafarah (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him), etc.), the Fajarah (wicked evil doers). 42
