Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Mim. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
