THUS, INDEED, have We sent Moses with Our messages unto Pharaoh and his great ones; and he said: "Behold, I am an apostle of the Sustainer of all the worlds!" 46 But when he came to them with Our signs, lo! they laughed at them. 47 And We did not show them a sign but it was greater than its like, and We overtook them with chastisement that they may turn. 48 'Sorcerer' they said, 'pray to your Lord for us in accordance to the covenant He has made with you, and surely we shall be rightly guided' 49 But when We removed the Penalty from them, behold, they broke their word. 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: “My people, do I not have dominion over Egypt, and are these streams not flowing beneath me? Can't you see? 51 Nay! I am better than this fellow, who is contemptible, and who can hardly speak distinctly: 52 "And then - why have no golden armlets been bestowed on him? or why have no angels come together with him?" 53 Thus he incited his people to levity, and they obeyed him: for, behold, they were people depraved! 54 We took revenge on them by drowning them all together. 55 And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages. 56
