The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the star when it plunges, 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 Indeed it is not except a Revelation which is revealed, 4 something that a very mighty one has imparted to him: 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 His heart lies not of what he saw; 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary, 14 Near it is the Paradise of Abode. 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 Have you then considered the Lat and the Uzza, 19 And another, the third (goddess), Manat? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 To Allah belong both the Next World and the present. 25
