A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
