Dawn (Al-Fajr)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn 1 and the ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 led rebellious lives, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 And come into My Paradise! 30
