The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And [by] the day when it appears 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 And testifieth to the Good, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 and have no faith in receiving any reward (from God). 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world). 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 none shall enter it but the most wicked, 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 one who gives his wealth to become purified, 18 They do not expect any reward 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
