۞ THE CONCRETE REALITY. 1 What is the Inevitable Calamity? 2 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the reality is! 3 The tribes of Thamud and 'Aad belied the Striking Day. 4 As for Thamood, they were destroyed by the Screamer; 5 and the 'Ad were destroyed by a furious wind 6 which He let loose upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession; so that (if you had been there) you might have seen people lying prostrate, as though they were uprooted trunks of hollowed palm trees. 7 Do you see any trace of them? 8 The Pharaoh, those who lived before him and the people of the Subverted Cities all persisted in doing evil. 9 and rebelled against their Lord's Messenger. So He took them with a stern taking. 10 Lo! when the waters rose, We carried you upon the ship 11 In order to make it a warning for you, and that the ear retentive may preserve it. 12 Then when the Horn is blown with one blast 13 and the earth and the mountains are carried aloft and are crushed to bits at one stroke, 14 Then on that Day shall the (Great) Event befall, 15 And the sky will be rent asunder, for on that Day it will be so frail. 16 And the angels shall be on the borders thereof; and on that Day eight shall bear over them the Throne of thy Lord. 17 The Day whereon ye shall be mustered nothing hidden by you shall be hidden. 18 Then, he who is given his book in his right hand will say: 'Here, take and read my book! 19 Certainly I thought that I should encounter my reckoning.' 20 So he shall be in a life of pleasure, 21 In high empyrean 22 The fruits of which are near at hand: 23 [They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth in the days past." 24 But as for him who is given his book in his left hand, he shall say, 'Would that I had not been given my book 25 and knew nothing of my reckoning. 26 Oh, would that it had been the ending! 27 My wealth hath not availed me, 28 "My power has perished from me!"... 29 (A command will be issued): “Seize him and shackle him, 30 and then roast him in Hell, 31 And then insert him in a chain whereof the length is seventy cubits. 32 Verily he was wont not to believe in Allah, the Mighty. 33 nor did he urge the feeding of the needy. 34 "So no friend hath he here this Day. 35 nor any food save the filth 36 “Which none except the guilty shall eat.” 37
