The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise, and warn. 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 And pollution shun. 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 And children present [with him] 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It leaves and spares no one and nothing. 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
