The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 And the moon when she followeth him, 2 And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness; 3 By the Night as it conceals it; 4 by the heavens and that (Power) which established them, 5 by the earth and that (Power) which spread it out 6 By the Soul, and the proportion and order given to it; 7 and inspired it with its sin and its piety, 8 prosperous is he who purified it, 9 And miserable is he who hath buried it. 10 Thamud belied in their exorbitance. 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 So the Noble Messenger of Allah said to them, “Stay away from the she camel of Allah, and from its turn to drink.” 13 However, they rejected him and slew her. So their Lord completely destroyed them and their city for their sins. 14 And He feared not the consequence thereof 15
