The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 and the punishment seized them. Surely, in that there is a sign. Yet most of them do not believe. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
