The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
