The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
