The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the Book and (of) a Quran that makes (things) clear. 1 The disbelievers will ardently wish that if only they had been Muslims! (At the time of death / in their graves / on the Day of Resurrection.) 2 leave them to eat, and to take their joy, and to be bemused by hope; certainly they will soon know! 3 Never a city have We destroyed, but it had a known decree, 4 No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter. 5 And yet, they [who deny the truth] say: "O thou unto whom this reminder has [allegedly] been bestowed from on high: verily, thou art mad! 6 Why do you not bring down angels upon us if you are indeed truthful?" 7 We send not the angels down except for just cause: if they came (to the ungodly), behold! no respite would they have! 8 Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. 9 We had also sent apostles to people of earlier persuasions. 10 And never came there unto them a messenger but they did mock him. 11 Thus do We insert denial into the hearts of the criminals. 12 they do not believe in it. This has been the wont of people of this kind from ancient times. 13 If We were even to open for them a way to the heavens, and they could continually climb up to it in broad daylight, 14 they would surely have said, "It is only our eyes that are spellbound! Nay, we have been bewitched! 15
