He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 How canst thou know, whether haply he might be cleansed, 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 To him you attend; 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 And he fears, 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 Indeed, this [Quran] is an admonition. 11 So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it. 12 (This Quran) is also recorded in honorable books, 13 exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes (angels). 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what did He create him? 18 Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure, 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 Then causeth him to die, and burieth him; 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 how We pour down rain in abundance, 25 and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder; 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 And grapes and green fodder 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 for you and for your animals to enjoy. 32 But when there comes the Deafening Blast 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 his consort, his sons, 36 on that Day, to every one of them will his own state be of sufficient concern. 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
