Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 There surely is an oath for thinking man. 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 led rebellious lives, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 No! But you show no good to the orphan, 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 into My Paradise. 30
