The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 arise and warn, 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 thy robes purify 4 and defilement flee! 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 and sons standing before him, 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 Then looked he, 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
