۞ THE CONCRETE REALITY. 1 What is the Reality? 2 And what have you understood, how tremendous the true event is! 3 Thamud and 'Aad denied the Striking Calamity. 4 Thamood, they were destroyed by the violent shout (of Gabriel), 5 And as to Ad, they were destroyed by a roaring, violent blast. 6 Which He imposed on them for seven long nights and eight long days so that thou mightest have seen men lying overthrown, as they were hollow trunks of palm-trees. 7 So do you see any survivor among them? 8 The Pharaoh, those who lived before him and the people of the Subverted Cities all persisted in doing evil. 9 And they disobeyed the Apostle of their Lord, so He punished them with a vehement punishment. 10 Lo, when the waters rose, We bore you in the running ship 11 That We might make it a memorial for you, and that remembering ears (that heard the story) might remember. 12 When the single blast is sounded on the trumpet, 13 And the earth with the mountains shall be lifted up and crushed with one crash, 14 Then on that Day shall happen the Event. 15 And the sky will be rent asunder, for it will that Day be flimsy, 16 and the angels shall stand upon its borders, and upon that day eight shall carry above them the Throne of thy Lord. 17 On that day ye will be exposed; not a secret of you will be hidden. 18 Then, he who is given his book in his right hand will say: 'Here, take and read my book! 19 Surely I knew that I should have to meet my reckoning. 20 Then he shall find himself in a life of bliss; 21 In a Garden on high, 22 Its [fruit] to be picked hanging near. 23 We shall say to him, "Eat and drink joyfully as a reward for the good deeds you did in days gone by." 24 But as for him whose record shall be placed in his left hand, he will exclaim: "Oh, would that I had never been shown this my record, 25 and had not known my account. 26 "Ah! Would that (Death) had made an end of me! 27 My wealth hath not availed me, 28 [and] all my power of argument has died away from me!" 29 (It will be said): Take him and fetter him 30 Roast him in Hell, 31 And then insert him in a chain whereof the length is seventy cubits. 32 He did not believe in God the supreme, 33 And urged not on the feeding of Al-Miskin (the poor), 34 therefore he today has not here one loyal friend, 35 Nor any food save filth 36 “Which none except the guilty shall eat.” 37
