He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 How canst thou know, whether haply he might be cleansed, 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 Though it is not your concern if he should not grow. 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 and fearfully, 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 Not this way - this is the advice. 11 and so, whoever is willing may remember Him 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 exalted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 noble and virtuous scribes. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 then the way eased for him, 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 And We made corn grow, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 laughing and joyous 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 Darkness shall cover them. 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
