Samood gave the lie to the apostles 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism), my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 “And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?” 149 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
