Dawn (Al-Fajr)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn; 1 By the Nights twice five; 2 by the even and the odd, 3 and by the passing night, 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Have you not heard how your Lord dealt with Aad? 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Enter thou among My servants! 29 And come into My Paradise! 30
