The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
