KAF HA YA 'AIN SAD. 1 This is the story of the blessing of your Lord to His servant Zachariah. 2 when he called upon his Lord in low tones, saying, 3 "Lord, my bones have weakened and my head has turned hoary with age, but never, Lord, have I been disappointed in my prayer to you: 4 And surely I fear my cousins after me, and my wife is barren, therefore grant me from Thyself an heir, 5 one that might be my heir and the heir of the house of Jacob; and make him, Lord, one that will be pleasing to You. 6 “O Zakaria! We give you the glad tidings of a son whose name is Yahya (John) – before him, We have not created anyone of this name.” 7 "How can I have a son, O Lord" he said, "when my wife is barren and I am old and decrepit?" 8 [An angel] said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.' " 9 [Zakariya (Zachariah)] said: "My Lord! Appoint for me a sign." He said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak unto mankind for three nights, though having no bodily defect." 10 So he came from the chamber to his people, and suggested to them (by signs) to sing the praises of the Lord morning and evening. 11 "O John! Hold the Book with all your strength." We had bestowed wisdom upon him while he was still a child; 12 and We also endowed him with tenderness and purity, and he was exceedingly pious 13 And kind to his parents, neither arrogant nor disobedient. 14 And peace is upon him the day he was born, and the day he will taste death, and the day he will be raised alive. 15
