The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
