The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Eager to roast; 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 Are free of blame, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
