Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night – you will be pursued.” 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
