Thamud denied the messengers 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 In gardens and springs. 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 and the punishment seized them. Surely, in that there is a sign. Yet most of them do not believe. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
