The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
