The Town (Al-Balad)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael) 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 or, in a day of famine, the feeding of 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
