The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 they see it as being far off; 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 Except those who pray, 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 who guard their privates 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
