The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 arise, and warn! 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 but unto thy Sustainer turn in patience. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 Then he looked around, 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
