A multitude from the ancients. 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
