Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 By the Nights twice five; 2 And the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 They were tyrants in the land 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 [But unto the righteous God will say,] "O thou human being that hast attained to inner peace! 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Join My worshipers and 29 And enter into My garden. 30
