The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is a revelations which has been revealed to him 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 then revealed to his servant that he revealed. 10 His heart added no untruth to what he saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary, 14 near which is Paradise. 15 Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!) 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 as well as [in] Manat, the third and last [of this triad]? 20 What, have you males, and He females? 21 That, then, is an unjust division. 22 They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance. 23 Shall man have whatsoever he wisheth for! 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
