The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn, 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 And sons present by his side. 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 On him I shall impose a fearful doom. 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
