Dawn (Al-Fajr)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And by ten nights, 2 And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah). 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 (The people of) Aram, possessors of lofty buildings, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 O thou peaceful soul! 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 And enter among My [righteous] servants 29 And come into My Paradise! 30
