(O Muhammad), they ask you about Dhu al-Qarnayn. Say: "I will give you an account of him." 83 We established him in the land and gave him means to all things. 84 He therefore pursued a purpose. 85 until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and nearby he found a nation. 'ThulKarnain' We said, 'you must either punish them or show them kindness' 86 He said: As for him who doeth wrong, we shall punish him, and then he will be brought back unto his Lord, Who will punish him with awful punishment! 87 But as for him who believes and does righteous deeds - he will have the ultimate good [of the life to come] as his reward; and [as for us,] we shall make binding on him [only] that which is easy to fulfill." 88 He then followed (another) road 89 Till he reached the point of the rising sun, and saw it rise over a people for whom We had provided no shelter against it. 90 So (it was). And We knew all concerning him. 91 Then he followed still another path, 92 after this to the middle of two mountains where he found a people who could hardly understand a single word. 93 They said, "Dhu 'l-Qarnayn, Gog and Magog are ravaging this land. Would you establish a barrier between us and them if we pay you a certain tax?" 94 He said: That wherein my Lord hath established me is better (than your tribute). Do but help me with strength (of men), I will set between you and them a bank. 95 "Give me pieces (blocks) of iron," then, when he had filled up the gap between the two mountain-cliffs, he said: "Blow," till when he had made it (red as) fire, he said: "Bring me molten copper to pour over it." 96 Thus they were not able to mount it, nor were they able to burrow through it. 97 He said: 'This is a mercy from my Lord. But when my Lord's promise is come, He will make it dust. The promise of my Lord is true' 98 ۞ AND ON that Day" We shall [call forth all mankind and] leave them to surge like waves [that dash] against one another; and the trumpet [of judgment] will be blown, and We shall gather them all together. 99 And We shall set hell on that Day unto the infidels with a setting. 100 Those whose eyes had been within a cover [removed] from My remembrance, and they were not able to hear. 101
