A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
