Nay, and by the moon, 32 And the night when on the wane, 33 And the daybreak when it shines; 34 This is but one of the mighty (portents), 35 a warning to humankind, 36 to whoever of you desires to go forward or lag behind. 37 Every soul is held in pledge for what it earns, 38 save the Companions of the Right; 39 [Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other 40 and will ask of the criminals, 41 What led you into the Scorching Fire? 42 and they shall reply, "We were not among those who prayed; 43 and we did not feed the poor; 44 we indulged in vain arguments along with those who indulged in them; 45 "And we used to belie the Day of Recompense 46 Till death overtook us. 47 Then there will not profit them intercesion of the interceders. 48 If such will be the Day of Judgment, what is the matter with them? Why do they run away from guidance, 49 As if they were alarmed donkeys 50 fleeing from a lion? 51 Nay, every man of them desires to be -- given -- scrolls unrolled. 52 Nay! but they do not fear the hereafter. 53 Nay; this is an Exhortation. 54 So whoever wills may heed advice from it. 55 And they shall not heed unless Allah willeth. He is the Lord of piety, and the Lord of forgiveness. 56
