Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
