The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 in which you are now living 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
