The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you. 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
