In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou enwrapped! 1 Keep vigil the night long, save a little - 2 of one-half thereof - or make it a little less than that, 3 Or increase thereto. And intone the Qur'an with measured intonations. 4 Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). 5 Surely in the watches of the night the soul is most receptive and words more telling. 6 whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. 7 And remember the Name of thy Lord, and devote thyself unto Him very devoutly. 8 Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He; so take Him for a Guardian. 9 And have patience with what they say, and leave them with noble (dignity). 10 And let Me alone with the beliers, owners of ease: and respite thou them a little. 11 Verily with Us are heavy fetters and Scorch. 12 And food that chokes, and a painful punishment. 13 On the Day the earth and the mountains will convulse and the mountains will become a heap of sand pouring down. 14 Surely We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 but Pharaoh rebelled against the Messenger, so We seized him remorselessly. 16 If you persist in disbelieving, how will you guard yourself against the (woe of the) Day that will turn children grey-haired, 17 On that day, the heavens will be rent asunder. This is the decree of God which has already been ordained. 18 Surely this is a Reminder; so let him who will take unto his Lord a way. 19
