The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 And the family in which he was. 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 except those that pray 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 who guard their privates 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
